GC Pliers from GC America are one of those products I don’t use every day, but anytime I show them in one of our clinical presentations, I get hundreds of requests for information on them. They are designed to remove temporary crowns, cast gold crowns, cast metal cores and porcelain crowns. While they work well for all of these indications, they really shine when it comes to all-ceramic and PFM crowns.

The pliers come with rubber tips that fit into the metal beaks so that the pliers won’t scratch the porcelain. It also comes with an emery powder that the rubber tips can be dipped in to help ensure the pliers will not slip off the crown while trying to remove it.

My favorite use for the pliers is when we have temporarily cemented a crown that needs to be taken off. With the rubber tips and the emery powder, you are able to firmly grab the porcelain without causing any damage to it. I find it far superior to other methods designed to remove these types of crowns. You may not need them often, but when you do you will be glad you have them.
