My local anesthetic book from dental school left a lot to be desired, although it was probably state of the art in 1986. It didn’t have any color pictures, and it felt much more academic than it did practical. And so it was that I had been practicing dentistry for 25 years and had never given a Gow-Gates injection (in fact, our newest dentist who graduated in 2013 reported that her class was also not taught this injection!). When I saw the level of detail in this text, I called one of the authors, Kathy Bassett, to compliment her on the book. She was going to be down in Southern California, and offered to walk me through my first Gow-Gates! I am now sold on this technique. (We filmed it and will be releasing it soon.) I also gave my first AMSA injection because of the book, which now can be purchased with a clinical DVD outlining all these injections. Do yourself a favor and use this book and DVD to teach your old dog syringe a few new local anesthesia tricks.
