Editor’s Letter

June 15, 2017

Welcome to the first issue of the newly expanded Chairside® magazine. After serving as editor-in-chief of Inclusive™ magazine for the last three years, I am excited to see our implant-specific content joining the pages of Chairside, where it will be featured alongside articles on restorative and esthetic dentistry. As someone who has been placing implants for 45 years, I am proud to see implant therapy recognized as an integral part of modern dentistry.

Wherever your dental interests lie, this issue includes a variety of tools, techniques, clinical tips and expert advice that we believe can help your practice thrive. In the featured Q&A, renowned dental researcher Dr. Rella Christensen discusses her latest clinical studies with TRAC Research and the CR Foundation®, the surprising performance of BruxZir® Full-Strength Solid Zirconia, and some fascinating prospects for treating and preventing tooth decay.

In Dr. Timothy Kosinki’s latest article, he reflects on a pro bono case in which full-mouth reconstruction was provided for a local musician with limited financial resources, reminding us of the life-changing possibilities of implant dentistry. Immediate implant placement helps improve the lives of patients by instantly replacing an untreatable tooth, and Dr. Paresh Patel’s article explores the factors to evaluate when determining whether this approach to treatment is indicated.

Clinical Editor Dr. Siamak Abai’s contribution to this issue outlines a straightforward clinical protocol for replacing an ill-fitting complete denture, detailing the steps needed to establish ideal form and function, which can eventually be used as a blueprint for an implant restoration. And in the third part of his series on implant occlusion, Dr. Randolph Resnik illustrates how to achieve an occlusal scheme that minimizes stress on the implants and prosthesis for an edentulous patient.

This issue includes two articles with tips for growing your patient caseload. Practice management expert Carrie Webber from Jameson Management explains how employing a team approach to customer service and case acceptance can improve the office’s performance. Will Schmidt, RDA, offers suggestions for earning the patient’s trust by improving communication strategies and chairside interactions.

Other articles include bonding recommendations for zirconia veneers, an implant crown delivery method that avoids residual cement, and the delivery of a challenging restoration fabricated through a fully digital workflow.

While the content of Chairside magazine has expanded, our mission remains the same: to help you keep current with the latest techniques and innovations shaping the world of dentistry. As always, we welcome your feedback.
