Process Improvement Specialist, Lab Operations
“I think that the best way to learn is to teach. So when I had the opportunity to be a mentor and have an intern come in and work for Lab Operations, I really wanted to sink my teeth in to be a leader in our department. And our department was really new, which means we didn’t necessarily know exactly where we were going. So when Austin joined, he really helped shape the direction of the department, and that natural progression also helped shape my view of where I wanted to go as a leader and a manager in my career.
“I think the program itself is designed to be unique in that the interns actually do something here. In Austin’s case, he took a project from conception to implementation, all on his own, with very little direction from me or other members of the team. And when I say, 'All on his own,' I mean he led the project, with help from other members of the organization, like IT and Engineering, the Help Desk. Without the entire company, none of that would have ever been completed, but he had the vision and was able to see that vision through. And I know that there were other interns that also had that experience here. And, like I said, I think that what makes this internship different from other internships is that we actually do something here. So that’s what’s so great about it.
“Austin helped me to see what kind of leader I really want to be. One of my challenges in management has always been delegation because it was always hard for me to trust people that work for me. Right off the bat, I trusted Austin, and I still do — with anything. I think he can get anything done that he puts his mind to. And having that experience with someone that I work with, it really will shape the type of leader and manager I will be for my entire career; knowing that I can trust someone the way that I trusted Austin.
“I would tell incoming interns to just relax, be yourself and have fun in your job. The best thing about Glidewell is the entrepreneurial spirit that goes through all levels of the organization, from senior-level executives all the way down to the technician level. That entrepreneurial spirit in a sense is also about being yourself because you need to be yourself to be an entrepreneur, to pursue the path that you want to take within the company to get the job done. In other words, to get the job done: just relax, be yourself and have fun with it. Glidewell is a great place to work!”
