Success with Local Anesthesia: Mandibular Arch Techniques

Course Objectives

1 CE Credit

This course explores the mandibular arch, emphasizing the pterygomandibular triangle's role in effective anesthesia. Kathy Bassett will cover anatomical considerations of various block techniques, including Halstead, High Block, Short Needle, Akinosi, Gow-Gates, PDL-Inferior Alveolar, and retromolar techniques. Participants will learn to identify factors leading to the failure of common mandibular block techniques and utilize alternative injection methods for profound anesthesia and quick onset rescue injections.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the relevance of the anatomy and histology of the pterygomandibular triangle to effective anesthesia.
  • Identify factors that may lead to failure of common mandibular block techniques.
  • Contrast the anatomical factors impacting common Halstead mandibular blocks with “High Block”, “Short Needle”, Akinosi and Gow-Gates block techniques, and PDL-Inferior Alveolar block and retromolar techniques.
  • Apply knowledge of relevant mandibular anatomy to alternative injection techniques to leverage for profound anesthesia and quick onset rescue injections.
