Orascoptic, have you been reading my diary? I am old enough to be a part of the group of dentists who did not wear loupes in dental school. It was a big leap for most of us at the time because trying them out meant being forced to tolerate the two-week learning curve of getting used to loupes. It seems ridiculous now that we would’ve ever waited on using magnification simply because we didn’t want to be uncomfortable for 10 working days. Once you acclimate to loupes, you begin to find yourself wanting an increase in magnification, and then typically you settle on a magnification that works well for the procedures that you do most of the time. I settled at 3.2 times magnification, but there were definitely times where I wish I had more magnification for examining a crown margin, or perhaps searching a pulpal floor looking for a hard-to-find canal orifice. Like most dentists, I wasn’t about to purchase a second set of loupes at 5 times magnification just for those special situations.

Apparently the engineers at Orascoptic were thinking about this dilemma. Now with the introduction of the EyeZoom™ loupes, you can have it all: 3 times, 4 times and 5 times magnification, simply with the twist of the lens. They feel slightly heavier than my current Orascoptic loupes, but with three levels of on-demand magnification, I’ll never be able to go back. Why have one pair of loupes when you can have three?
