Temporomandibular Disorders and the Human Jaw

Course Objectives

1 CE Credit

This course covers the unique structure and function of the human jaw from an evolutionary perspective. With current understanding of the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and positional relationship of the mandibular condyle, along with new evidence of the innervation of the joint system, teeth can be viewed as an orthopedic support system with significant impacts on multiple body systems through proprioceptive dysfunction, inflammatory pathways, head/neck posture and sleep apnea.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the orthopedic and proprioceptive function of the craniomandibular system
  • Describe the causes and solutions to many craniomandibular disorders, including TMJ dysfunction, headache, craniofacial pain disorders and systemic effects on the ear (such as Eustachian tube function, balance and tinnitus)
