Portrait of a Technician – Steve Lam, CDT

Steve Lam’s smile fills a room. That’s the first thing that strikes coworkers and friends about this quiet, unassuming Glidewell Laboratories dental technician. Though Steve shies from attention, his exceptional work — both on the lab floor and in his hobby of photography — land him in the spotlight.
Steve began his career in dental technology some 20 years ago. He has spent the entirety of his career at Glidewell Labs, making him one of the company’s most senior employees. However, he doesn’t necessarily see his job in the All-Ceramics Department as just work.
“I feel my restorations are like sculptures,” he says.
It’s a fitting comparison for a man with such an artistic mind. Steve’s interest in photography goes back about seven years. He has entered and won company photography club contests. His work has been displayed in the company lobby and in newsletters. Steve likens his work in the lab to art. Some might call that an exaggeration. But for one of the most respected technicians in the lab, it is simply how he views things — through an artist’s eye.
“I love Steve’s [IPS] Empress® veneers (Ivoclar Vivadent; Amherst, N.Y.) because he has the unique ability to make stained veneers look like layered veneers,” says Dr. Michael DiTolla, Glidewell’s Director of Clinical Education and Research. “To me, that is the sign of a true artist.”
Indeed, Steve takes his job very seriously. Steve’s skill has helped him achieve the designation of Certified Dental Technician in ceramics.
His dedication and skill are evidenced by his popularity. Dentists often ask for him by name when sending a case to the lab. He has a great deal of pride in his work. When he fabricates a restoration for a dentist, “I feel I’ve created something I can feel good about.”
Not only does he feel good about what he creates, but also he feels good about the lab he works for. “Glidewell has the latest technology available,” Steve says. He believes that this is one reason dentists should try out the lab. “We have the best equipment and technology,” he adds.
Though he is quick to praise the lab, he is reluctant to accept personal accolades for his work or for his photography. To Steve, being a technician and a photographer are just part of who he is. In fact, when asked what he thinks is the best photograph he has taken, he says he doesn’t think there is a best. His favorite? He doesn’t have a favorite. It’s this relaxed attitude and humility that draw co-workers to him.
Steve resides in Garden Grove, California, with his wife and two sons: Nathan is 7 and Doran is 5. In his spare time, Steve most enjoys spending time with his family.
Between a busy career as a dental technician, a passion for photography and a family, it seems as though Steve has made life “a piece of artwork,” just like his restorations.
