The lip and cheek retractor that I have been using for years on and off camera is no longer being made, and it shows no signs of coming back — despite rumors I heard it might. Thus began our search through every retractor we could find on the market to see which offered similar lip and cheek retraction. After much experimentation, we chose ComfortView® from Premier® Dental. Because every case I do now is filmed, it’s mandatory that we have retractors in place. However, many dentists tell me that they have started using them just to free up one of their hands or one of their assistants’ hands. Last week, for fun, we did some anterior crowns without retractors, and those dentists were correct: it’s quite possible that once you start using them you will never go back. My favorite feature is how they hold the lips away from the teeth facially (something my old retractors never did), which is especially helpful with photography. The retractors and the bumpers are autoclavable, and they come in two sizes: universal, which will fit 90 percent of patients, and a smaller size for kids and small adults.
