This little scaler has been a staple of my everyday practice for years. In a restorative-driven practice where we’re constantly placing and removing temporary restorations, residual cement on natural teeth can be a nuisance. Beyond its obvious usefulness for dental hygiene and scaling procedures, the KaVo SONICflex™ also allows me to efficiently remove the cement from the tooth or the internal surface of a temporary or permanent restoration. What really surprised me with this scaler was the range of tips that KaVo offers. The diamond-coated tips, for example, can be used to finish the internal surface of preparations to receive direct or indirect restorations such as fillings, inlays and onlays. My favorite option for the SONICflex tips is what’s called the “Prep Cem” tip, which allows me to gently seat my restorations with sonic vibration. All around, it’s a must-have for everyday use.
