Is there anything more demoralizing for a dentist than a patient’s post-operative sensitivity? Tough preps, tough impressions and difficult-to-anesthetize patients are all speed bumps on the road of dentistry (and the reason we get paid the big bucks). However, to put your all into a case and finally cement a couple great-looking crowns, only to have pain start the next day with the patient asking why he or she can’t eat or drink anything hot or cold is disheartening for all parties involved. Anything I can easily do to help prevent post-operative sensitivity is worth doing, such as placing G5™ All-Purpose Desensitizer prior to crown cementation on vital teeth. G5 is 5% glutaraldehyde with 35% HEMA and has shown little to no effect on retention of crowns cemented with any cement, including resin cements.
