Somehow the Alfa™ Triple Tray^® has flown under my radar for some time, but my son — and others prone to gagging — will be pleased that I stumbled upon it recently. The Alfa tray is a specially designed triple tray for taking simultaneous full-arch upper and lower alginate, or alginate substitute, impressions. The number of impressions taken goes from two to one, which is huge for patients who gag or are nervous about gagging. Also, because these trays are manufactured without a palate, the patient’s tongue is allowed to sit in a position where it can block impression material from traveling down the throat. As a result, patients don’t get that panicked look on their faces when their protective reflexes are being challenged. In our operatory, we now use Alfa trays to take impressions for study models, athletic mouthguards, nightguards, bleaching trays and custom trays.
