As some of you may have seen on our website, a couple of years back I placed my first implant. We filmed it and released it as a video with the very literal title, "My First Implant." After 25 years as a practicing dentist, I was finally impressed enough with the technology to dive in. I wish Dr. Louie Al-Faraje’s excellent "Oral Implantology Surgical Procedures Checklist" had existed back then, but it’s just as useful now for the new implant surgeon. From reminding you to check that the consent form is signed, to reflection of the flap and through the osteotomy, not only are all the steps listed, but all the armamentaria are listed as well. Your dental assistant will love having such a detailed checklist for this new procedure. Every airplane I step onto has two gray-haired pilots using a checklist to ensure a good outcome; maybe we should consider adopting this strategy in dentistry as well.
