Like many dentists, every year I find myself using more self-etch or self-adhesive products. At this point, I only use etch-and-rinse (Total Etch [Ivoclar Vivadent; Amherst, N.Y.]) for veneers, and most of those preps are almost completely in enamel these days. So when I saw that Pulpdent now has a self-adhesive buildup material called SPEE-DEE™ Build-Up, I couldn’t wait to use it. I build up nearly all of my preps to some degree, and the ability to do it without separate etching and bonding steps gives me one less excuse to not do a buildup. Of course, you can still use etch-and-bond if you want, if it’s a nonretentive buildup, but most of the ones I do are going into the void of an old amalgam or composite, and the self-adhesive bond is more than enough, thanks to the mechanical retention. Place the material, light-cure for 20 seconds — it’s dual-cure, incidentally — and prep away!
