Preventive care appliances include nightguards, dental sleep appliances, migraine prevention devices, retainers and sports mouthguards. Glidewell has always been honored to play a role in helping dentists protect those smiles and improve the lives of patients who need preventive solutions for bruxism, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, migraines, misaligned teeth, and sports-related dental trauma.

This achievement was made possible because of the collaboration with tens of thousands of dentists who make preventive care a regular part of their dental offerings. Ten million appliances weren’t fabricated overnight, of course. Keeping pace with dentists’ needs and creating the best possible products has been a decadeslong endeavor. Glidewell has been fabricating preventive care offerings like the PlaySafe^® Sports Mouthguard since 1995, the Silent Nite^® Sleep Appliance since 1996, and the Comfort H/S^™ Bite Splint since 2001. 

Thermoforming techniques initially led the way as comfort, proper fit and durability became expected components of preventive appliances at Glidewell. As dentists’ and patients’ needs continued to evolve, so did the fabrication techniques. As 3D printing techniques developed, their use surged in the lab to improve the speed and accuracy of delivery. From that need, the Comfort3D™ Bite Splint and Silent Nite 3D Sleep Appliance were released, highlighting an all-digital workflow. The most recent evolution took place with the release of the ORB Sport^™ Smart Mouthguard as Glidewell entered the world of smart wearables.
