Education Corner: 2023: A Year of Glidewell Symposia

November 28, 2023

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS YEAR’S EVENTS

For 2023, Glidewell planned an abundant schedule with seven symposia to provide dentists multiple opportunities to attend live clinical education events across the most important aspects of dentistry. Seven events were held, including “Implants: The Surgical Phase,” “Dental Sleep Medicine,” “Esthetics: Creating Beautiful Smiles,” “Complete Dentures: Mastering the Foundational Skills,” “IOX: The Digital Dentistry Experience,” “Dentistry on the Rise: Elevating Your Practice with Technology,” and “Implants: the Restorative Phase.” These packed events were marked by expert podium presentations, hands-on workshops and valuable networking opportunities. Here’s a look at some highlights from this year’s symposia:

2023 kicked off with “Implants: The Surgical Phase,” where speakers like Dr. Jack Hahn (pictured above) gave podium presentations designed to help attendees bolster their skills in all aspects of implant dentistry.

Doctors were able to attend hands-on workshops like this one with Dr. Paresh Patel in which he covered full-arch treatment with the use of bone- and tissue-supported surgical guides.

In June, Glidewell hosted “Esthetics: Creating Beautiful Smiles.” Dr. Taylor Manalili delivered her afternoon presentation on how to use restorative techniques to tackle complex esthetic problems.

This year’s IOX was a major success, where a sold-out crowd gathered to learn more about the growing sector of digital dentistry. Here, doctors received hands-on training from Dr. Chi’s Saturday workshop on grinding and polishing crowns for the final fit.

Here, IOX attendees in Dr. David Zant’s Saturday workshop, “Mastering Partial Coverage Restorations and Bridges,” can be seen designing onlays using the glidewell.io In-Office Solution.

Glidewell’s first symposium on sleep dentistry, “Dental Sleep Medicine,” was a great opportunity for dentists to learn from speakers like Ryan Javanbakht, founder and CEO of sleeptest.com, who spoke on the benefits of home sleep study reports.

Each symposium was capped off with a cocktail party for attendees at Mesa Manor, the home of Jim and Parvina Glidewell, for a chance to unwind and enjoy Newport Beach, California.

GLIDEWELL HOSTS THE FIRST AAID MAXICOURSE® PROGRAM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) MaxiCourse® program — the popular training program in oral implantology available throughout the United States and internationally — is being hosted for the first time at the Glidewell Clinical Education Center in Irvine, California, starting in September 2023. This program is being presented in nine sessions through May 2024, with classes offered once each month in three-day weekend blocks.

The Glidewell Clinical Education Center situated on the Glidewell campus in Irvine, California, is a premier location for lectures and hands-on training. It is also conveniently located minutes away from John Wayne Airport, popular restaurants, beaches and theme parks.

Dentists worldwide take the MaxiCourse program to become proficient in all aspects of implant dentistry, including biomedical sciences, diagnostic procedures, surgical and prosthetic protocols, and practice management. “The MaxiCourse is the most sought-after implant training course in the world, and now it’s here in California,” says Dr. Shankar Iyer, instructor and assistant director for the Newport Beach MaxiCourse. “After teaching this program for over 20 years all over the world, we are now ready to kickstart the program here with a stellar lineup of faculty.”

Participants can look forward to a comprehensive program from over 15 distinguished speakers, including Drs. Timothy Kosinski, Paresh B. Patel, Taylor Manalili, Shankar Iyer and Ali Mostafavi, who also serves as the program’s director. These instructors will provide expert guidance in a curriculum that includes topics like atraumatic extraction and bone grafting, digital workflows, immediate loading, and avoiding complications. In addition, participants will experience live clinical demonstrations and hands-on placement of implants in cadavers.

State-of-the-art learning facilities will give attendees ample opportunities to observe live demonstrations and get hands-on training using the latest technologies and techniques.

“Glidewell is proud to be associated with this comprehensive, high-quality implant educational program,” says Dr. Neil Park, vice president of clinical affairs at Glidewell. “Not only will this program prepare doctors for clinical success, it also confers eligibility for certification by the American Board of Oral Implantology, which is the most recognized credential in implant dentistry.”

GLIDEWELL DEBUTS LIVE CE COURSES IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

Seattle joins Irvine, California; Louisville, Kentucky; and Elizabeth, New Jersey, on the list of locations dentists can choose to attend a live CE course from Glidewell. These courses will be held at the Washington AGD Global Educational Center near the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, giving dentists in the Pacific Northwest convenient access to Glidewell’s live CE programs.

“We’re very excited to begin a series of courses hosted by our new Glidewell Local Lab in Seattle,” says Dr. Neil Park, vice president of clinical affairs at Glidewell. “Covering in-demand topics from implant restorations to crown & bridge procedures, these courses are a great way for doctors in the Seattle area to experience live hands-on Glidewell Clinical Education without the need to travel.” Here is an overview of the live courses held in Washington.

Surgical Placement of Dental Implants: A Restorative-Driven Approach

The first live course offered was one of Glidewell’s most popular. Dr. Timothy Kosinski, a seasoned live course presenter for Glidewell, demonstrated the practical step-by-step protocol for dental implant placement and prosthetic reconstruction. Attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of implant dentistry for their patients, and learned the fundamentals of implant placement through model-based, hands-on training. Those who attended this course on November 17–18 in Seattle also received a Hahn Tapered Implant Surgical Kit and five Hahn implants included with tuition (Glidewell Direct; Newport Beach, Calif.).

Dr. Kosinski provides an opportunity for one-on-one learning, to give course attendees a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of implant placement.

Hands-On Introduction to Single-Visit Dentistry with CAD/CAM Technology

Doctors enjoyed this new live course on September 29 and December 8. These one-day courses taught dentists how to scan, design and mill in-office restorations through the use of a fully integrated CAD/CAM system, and demonstrated the benefits of adopting these technologies as same-day dentistry becomes more widespread. These courses were taught by two experts in their fields: Dr. Justin Chi, director of clinical technologies at Glidewell, and Dr. Jinny Bender, a clinical doctor and lecturer at Glidewell. Visit glidewellcecenter.com to learn more and register for future courses.

Doctors who take this course get a step-by-step walkthrough of Glidewell’s proprietary CAD/CAM software, so they can take their new skills in digital dentistry and apply it in their practice right away.

Successful Crowns, Bridges and Veneers

This new, Seattle-exclusive course from Glidewell Clinical Education took place on November 10–11. Presenter Dr. Paresh B. Patel reviewed the complete clinical and laboratory protocol for crowns, bridges and veneers. Topics included smile design, treatment planning, tooth preparation and more, and the course concluded with adjusting, polishing and cementation techniques. Attendees also performed hands-on exercises for the preparation of anterior teeth, as well as finishing, polishing and cementing a monolithic posterior crown on a supplied model. Dentists in the Seattle area won’t want to miss future exclusive, live-learning opportunities like this one.

Doctors attending this course learned smile design, treatment planning and tooth preparation, as well as techniques for adjusting, polishing and cementation to achieve the perfect esthetic outcome.
