Overnight Delivery

When FedEx pioneered its hub-and-spoke model in the 1970s, it redefined delivery expectations. More recently, Amazon has leveraged its massive fulfillment network to ensure packages arrive at your door within two days, and sometimes even the same day. What began as a logistics revolution transforming commerce has become a clinical advantage, as dentistry now pairs physical delivery networks with the instant transmission of digital data.

In today’s workflow, an intraoral scan can be captured chairside and transmitted to the lab in seconds, eliminating traditional shipping delays. That digital handoff is where Glidewell’s rapid delivery system begins. Without changing your chairside workflow or investing in specialty equipment, you can prescribe Next-Day BruxZir® Zirconia restorations and get a crown or bridge delivered to your practice within 21 hours.

Inside Glidewell’s lab facilities, production never stops. For Next-Day BruxZir cases, digital prescriptions are received, logged and designed in Irvine, California, then electronically transferred to Glidewell’s Memphis, Tennessee, facility for milling, post-processing, and final shipment. Located near the FedEx Super Hub, the end-of-runway operation allows Glidewell to pair its high-velocity digital manufacturing workflow with one of the country’s most powerful overnight distribution networks. This tightly coordinated production-and-logistics system is what makes the 21-hour scan-to-office promise possible at scale.

The benefit reaches the dental office directly. Canceled appointments can be filled by bringing crown patients in sooner than expected, while non-revenue visits, such as recementing temporaries, can often be avoided by delivering the final crown instead.

Next-Day Delivery Made for a Stress-Free Wedding

Case Report

The patient presented in distress with a vertical fracture on tooth #8 and incisal edge chipping on #9 from biting into a fork three days before her daughter was getting married. We agreed to restore both central incisors with temporaries and send them out to the lab for next-day delivery of BruxZir® Esthetic crowns.

Periapical X-ray of upper anterior teeth showing completed endodontic treatment with posts in the central incisors.

Figures 1a–1c: Upon clinical examination it was discovered that both teeth had been endodontically treated with the temporary restorations still present.

Figure 2: Existing fractured tooth structure and temporary endodontic restorative material were removed and built back up for proper retention and resistance form, ensuring a healthy site to receive final restorations.

3D digital design of maxillary central incisor provisionals displayed in fastdesign.io, showing crown contours and gingival support within the full arch scan.

Figure 4: Using fastdesign.io software, provisionals were designed to support the gum tissue and allow for a ‘test drive’ of the final restorations. The Glidewell team reviewed the design and decided, with the patient’s input, to create broader contacts to fill in the negative spaces and give her new teeth a fuller look and level incisal edges. The patient went home with provisionals and was scheduled to return the next  morning. Note that while I decided to design and mill the provisionals chairside, the Next-Day BruxZir service does not require it.

Conclusion

The patient was thrilled with the outcome. In less than 21 hours, she regained a confident, natural smile, that allowed her to fully enjoy her daughter’s rehearsal dinner and wedding.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Cal State Fullerton, Alonso worked in the semiconductor and bottling sectors. That experience led him to Glidewell, where he recognized that dentistry could benefit from increased efficiency with scale and speed. As senior manager of mechanical engineering, Alonso is part of the leadership team that oversees the design and construction of manufacturing prototypes, machinery and robotic handling systems. “You have to build with intention, with a purpose, and then improve things with curiosity and determination,” says Delgado.
