Editor's Letter
Welcome to this inaugural edition of Integrate™ magazine. I sincerely hope that you will find the clinical cases, instruction and technology discussions found in these pages to be valuable in your practice of implant dentistry. I look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions for additional content that will make this publication hold even greater value for you.
Because we publish Chairside® magazine, some of our contributors questioned whether this additional dedicated implant magazine was necessary. After all, for 18 years Chairside has covered all phases of restorative dentistry, and doesn’t that include implants? But there are several ways that implant dentistry is distinct from other techniques in restorative dentistry.
Most of us practicing today had limited exposure to implants during dental school. That means that obtaining education in the surgical and restorative disciplines is a necessary prerequisite for successful clinical practice. The role of Integrate is to augment that education with articles that are instructive and illustrate the techniques and results of well-planned treatment.
Implant dentistry is also distinct because it is a restorative procedure with a critical surgical component. The surgical procedures range from the simple preparation of an osteotomy to complex procedures to augment sinuses and boney ridges. This requires a more extensive knowledge of anatomy, anesthesia, biological materials and pharmacology than other areas of dentistry might require. Articles like Dr. Randolph Resnik’s discussion of prophylactic antibiotic use and Dr. Taylor Manalili’s review of digital impressions in implant dentistry will help update this much-needed information.
We also learn from each other’s cases. By sharing cases like Dr. Paresh Patel’s demonstration of the buccal roll technique and Dr. Timothy Kosinski’s and Dr. Stephanie Tilley’s overdenture cases, we hope to help you create your vision of how you can continue to improve the lives of your patients with implant dentistry. Dr. Shankar Iyer’s documentation of a quadrant case using angled implants and Dr. David Hochberg’s discussion of cemented and screw-retained restorations will provide excellent examples of how to maximize your options when planning your implant restorations.
In this magazine, we also evaluate current educational programs in implant dentistry and spread awareness of some of the educational opportunities available to practicing dentists. Our interview with Drs. Randolph and Christopher Resnik will give you an appreciation for how the Resnik Implant Institute can provide a comprehensive head-start to your implant education. Other options explored in this issue include the Newport Beach AAID MaxiCourse® as well as the live hands-on programs, webinars, and on-demand online training available through Glidewell.
Whatever your level of training or experience, we believe that Integrate can help you reach your goals. We look forward to advancing together!
