The newest addition to the Newport Surgical family, Biotex PTFE Sutures (available through Glidewell Direct; Irvine, Calif.), is a non-resorbable suture made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) material. Designed to maximize patient comfort, the thread is soft and flexible, and does not contain any dyes or chemical coatings, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Convenient for clinicians, Biotex PTFE Sutures are also easy to handle. The thread’s minimal memory facilitates ease of positioning, tying and removal. Biotex sutures come equipped with a reverse-cutting needle tip of stainless steel, which has a bending resistance that is 33% stronger than that of competitors.1 Wrapped like a racetrack to prevent tangles, Biotex sutures are conducive to an efficient surgery even before they are out of the package.

BIOTEX DESIGN

Biotex PTFE sutures consist of a sterile nonresorbable monofilament that retains high tensile strength throughout its use. PTFE sutures should be removed from a patient’s mouth within 30 days. Biotex sutures also have high elasticity and their slim surgical needle is designed to accelerate the healing process by minimizing the puncture wound for the preservation of the surrounding tissue.

SUTURE COMPARISONS

Absorption

The key difference between the PTFE suture and other suture materials is its non-resorbable nature. While PTFE sutures are non-resorbable, sutures such as polyglycolic acid (PGA) and chromic gut are resorbable. In the case of a simple surgery, resorbable sutures, such as RELI® polyglycolic acid (REDISORB® PRO) and chromic gut (REDIGUT® CHROMIC PRO) sutures (available through Glidewell Direct), may be a convenient option for patients with esthetic concerns or scheduling conflicts, by eliminating the need for a suture removal visit.

Material

Despite its strength, PTFE sutures are gentle on patients’ tissues and are biologically inert. Besides distinctions in texture, strength and biocompatibility, each suture material also varies in its natural color: PTFE sutures are white, PGA sutures are violet and chromic gut sutures are brown.

The Biotex PTFE sutures are a dynamic addition to the Newport Surgical collection. To meet clinician preferences, Glidewell Direct offers Biotex sutures in the two most commonly used sizes, 3.0-metric and 4.0-metric diameters. Intended for single use only, they are sold in 10-packs, each with 45 cm of thread.
